On Books: MY LAUNCH PARTY IN SAN FRANCISCO
Thanks to the 200 or so people who came to help me launch my new book in San Francisco on May 10. I will be posting some pictures here in the next day or so. Take a peek at the new book in the bookstores or at Amazon -- it's titled The Geneticist Who Played Hoops with My DNA... and other masterminds from the frontiers of biotech, from Morrow/HarperCollins. It's about leading figures in genetics and what they are up to... check out the descriptions and reviews on my website, www.davidewingduncan.com.
The idea behind the book is to explain leading-edge science and the ethical and societal issues raised by this science by telling the stories of key scientists. It's a method that dates back at least to Plutarch's Lives of Famous Romans and Greeks written in the second century about key statesmen and generals and leaders from the ancient world; and also is influenced by Lytton Strachey's classic 1918 book Lives of Emminent Victorians. Strachey wrote about Florence Nightengale and three other Victorians with the aim of using these people's stories to explain the Victorian era.
Read and enjoy!
